TotalEnergies Launches Its Largest Solar Installation in Europe

TotalEnergies has commissioned a five-site, 263 MW solar complex near Seville, Spain the company’s largest solar venture in Europe which will generate 515 GWh annually, enough to power 150,000 homes, and support Spain’s 2030 target of 80% renewables.

French energy giant TotalEnergies announced on May 22 that it has brought online its largest solar power development in Europe: a cluster of five photovoltaic plants in the Seville region of Andalusia. Together, the facilities boast a combined capacity of 263 megawatts and are expected to produce approximately 515 gigawatt-hours of clean electricity each year sufficient to meet the average annual demand of some 150,000 households.

Olivier Jouny, TotalEnergies’ Senior Vice President for Renewables, highlighted the project’s strategic importance for both the company and Spain. “This installation solidifies TotalEnergies’ position as the fourth-largest electricity and gas supplier in Spain and contributes directly to the country’s goal of sourcing 80% of its power from renewable sources by 2030,” he said.

Underpinning the solar cluster’s viability are long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) for the bulk of its output, with any remaining electricity sold on the wholesale market. The regional government of Andalusia designated the development as being of “strategic interest,” a status that helped streamline permitting and fostered local support. During construction, the project created around 800 direct and indirect jobs, providing a significant economic boost to the province.

Despite a broader trend among major oil and gas companies to dial back renewable investments in favor of higher fossil-fuel margins, TotalEnergies continues to grow its clean-energy portfolio. With 28 GW of installed renewable capacity worldwide already, the group aims to reach 35 GW by year-end, balancing its traditional hydrocarbons business with an expanding renewables arm.

The Seville solar cluster underscores TotalEnergies’ commitment to diversifying its generation mix. As Europe’s energy landscape shifts toward decarbonization, the company is leveraging its global scale and financial strength to secure large-scale renewable footholds projects that dovetail with both its climate ambitions and local energy policies across key markets.
