SNCF Voyageurs has revealed the design of its highly anticipated "train of the future," the TGV M. This new generation of France's iconic high-speed rail service prioritises both passenger capacity and environmental consciousness.
Departing from the vibrant orange of its predecessors, the TGV M features a streamlined white exterior, a choice that both reflects contemporary aesthetics and reduces the need for air conditioning in warmer weather.
"This TGV M is a strategic asset for SNCF," explained CEO Christophe Fanichet. He emphasised the need to address rising travel demand and the potential to offer more competitive pricing due to increased capacity.
Adaptability and Innovation
The TGV M can accommodate up to 720 passengers, a significant 20% increase compared to current models. Its modular design allows for flexible configurations, enabling features like a bar or dedicated bike storage areas, to meet various market needs. SNCF has invested a substantial €3.5 billion to acquire 115 of these trains. Production is underway at Alstom's Belfort facility, with a rollout of roughly 12 trains per year starting in 2027, reaching full deployment over the next decade.
SNCF sees the TGV M as a crucial tool to maintain its market position as rail competition intensifies within France.
