The construction of the UK's largest electric car battery factory is set to commence this week at the former Royal Ordnance factory site in Puriton, near Bridgwater, Somerset. Agratas, the company behind the £4 billion project, has submitted its first compliance application to Somerset Council and anticipates starting piling work on Building One immediately.
Joe Hibbert, Vice President for Capital Projects at Agratas, emphasised the magnitude of the project, comparing the site's size to twice the length of the Shard laid end to end. He acknowledged the challenges and community concerns associated with a project of this scale and assured that noisy activities would not occur at night.
The construction phase is estimated to take two years and will involve around 2,000 workers. Upon completion in 2026, the factory is expected to create over 4,000 jobs. Agratas has committed to prioritising local employment and is collaborating with Bridgewater and Taunton College to develop tailored training programs.
Agratas aims to be a "good neighbor" and has established a dedicated community email address for residents to voice any concerns or questions about the development.
