Leading French agribusiness Avril Group is spearheading a bold initiative to transform camelina, a relative of rapeseed, into a cornerstone of greener aviation. Its goal is to establish camelina as a versatile intermediate crop, fulfilling the soil protection role of current cover crops while also providing a significant source of biofuel for air transport.

Camelina boasts a short growth cycle which offers a faster turnaround than rapeseed, making it ideal as a rotational crop. However, the Avril Group is working with Brussels to secure approval for large-scale camelina cultivation specifically for biofuel production.

The current fluctuating price of traditional oilseeds, driven by factors like palm oil demand and soybean competition, also presents a complex landscape for camelina. French farmers currently seek more consistent and rewarding market opportunities.

The Avril Group's push with European authorities could play a pivotal role in determining camelina's future trajectory. If successful, it could pave the way for widespread adoption and a significant new source of sustainable aviation fuel within France and potentially beyond. However, balancing camelina's potential as a niche culinary oil with the needs of the biofuel market will be essential for ensuring its success and acceptance among growers.
